In May 2025, the sunny city of Cagliari, Sardinia hosted the first in a series of international trainings within the framework of our project DEAP – Nurturing Personal Development and Empowerment of Young People with Visual Impairment through Arts Education.
The training gathered educators and youth workers from Italy, Poland, the Czech Republic, Sweden and Cyprus. Over the course of six intensive days, participants developed practical skills in using ceramics as a tool to support inclusion and personal development among young people with visual impairments.
Ceramics as a tool for inclusive education
The sessions took place both in training rooms and in a real ceramic workshop environment. Under the guidance of master ceramicists Giovanni Pulli and Sonia Geracci, participants explored the full creative process: from planning and modeling, to sculpting, glazing, and decorating. A key highlight of the week was the study visit to the Nanni Pulli Ceramic Laboratory, where tradition and craftsmanship are passed down through generations.
Beyond art – building relationships
Each training day began with energizing group activities designed to strengthen cooperation and raise awareness of the needs of people with visual impairments. The program combined hands-on learning with space for reflection and peer exchange.
The atmosphere of openness, curiosity, and mutual respect helped participants build not only professional competences but also genuine international connections.
Reflection and what comes next
The final day focused on reflection – not only on the training process itself, but on personal and professional growth. Key questions emerged:
What have I learned?
How has my approach changed?
How can I bring this experience into my everyday work with visually impaired youth?
The training in Cagliari was the first practical module of the DEAP project. At the end of June, the group will meet again – this time in Brno, to continue their journey through the language of contact dance.
